What is the NIE?
The NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) is a unique number assigned to non-Spaniards living in Spain. It’s issued by the Spanish National Police and is required for almost all legal, financial, and administrative procedures.
There are two types of NIE:
- Temporary NIE: For short-term stays or specific procedures (like buying property).
- Resident NIE: For people planning to live in Spain long-term.
Why Do You Need a NIE?
You’ll need a NIE for:
- Opening a bank account
- Signing a work contract
- Registering with social security
- Renting or buying property
- Enrolling in public healthcare
- Starting a business
- Filing taxes
- Registering your kids at school
Basically, if you plan to do life in Spain, you need this number.
How to Apply for a NIE in Madrid
The process isn’t difficult—but it can be confusing. Here's what you need to know.
Step 1: Make an Appointment (Cita Previa)
This is where most people get stuck.
You must book an appointment online through the official website. The site is in Spanish, often buggy, and appointments are limited. Here’s what you’ll need to select:
- Province: Madrid
- Office: Usually Comisaría General de Extranjería
- Procedure: Asignación de NIE
💡Tip: Appointments go fast. Refresh the page often or check during off-hours.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Depending on your situation (student, worker, EU citizen, non-EU), the exact documents vary, but generally you’ll need:
- Completed EX-15 form
- Valid passport + photocopy
- Justification document (e.g., job offer, school acceptance, property purchase)
- Tasa 790 form, filled out and paid (approx. €9–€12)
- Proof of address (sometimes required)
- Two passport photos
💡Tip: Fill out the EX-15 in Spanish. You can find templates online, but I help clients complete it correctly the first time.
Step 3: Pay the Fee
Fill out the Tasa 790 Código 012 form online, print it, and pay at any bank.
Banks in Spain often require you to pay in person during specific hours (usually mornings).
Step 4: Attend the Appointment
Show up at the police station or immigration office with all documents, copies, and receipts.
- Be early
- Bring all paperwork printed and organized
- Be prepared for basic questions in Spanish
If everything is in order, you’ll either receive your NIE number on the spot or within a few days.
